Friday Film Review-Volver (2006)

Friday, 18 November 2011

This review is going to be biased because Volver is one of my favourite films, and is one of those that keeps coming back to me when I least expect it. It's about two sisters, Raimunda (Penélope Cruz) and Sole (Lola Dueñas) whose mother (Carmen Maura) comes back from the dead to deal with some unfinished business. The film follows the lives of the women as their lives unravel and dark family secrets are revealed. What I love about this film is it's vibrance, the strength of the characters, the attention to detail. Penélope Cruz truly delivers a great performance, as in, fact, all the actors do. The story contains some moments which could have ben exploitive or gruesome but are dealt out so gently that they come across as sincere, believable. Cruz plays Raimunda, a woman who life has dealt a band hand, with such strength and dignity that the moments when she tears up are all the more moving. The soundtrack is understated but perfectly crafted. Volver is simply a great film.

I also love the fashion of this film, it's a little bit classic, a little bit 90's and all perfect. Penélope Cruz has to wear the smoky eye better than anyone, right?
Bottom Line: A great cast of women  delivering a great story with wit and charm.
