One of the things I find amusing in my travels is the difference between the perception we have of our countries and the perception others have.
Translation: Immigrants, please don't leave us alone with the Spanish.

What Canadians think about Canadians:
As Canadians we have been brought up with the belief that other countries love us. I am not sure where this idea comes from but I think we all believe this. We even think that American's pretend to be us, I have no idea whether this is true or not, but it's certainly something we've all heard.
What Spaniards Think about Canadians:
Canadians? They're like Americans, right?
What Canadians think about Canada:
We say eh (do we?) We have the best beer (we don't.) We're polite (true).
What Spaniards think about Canada:
Canadians have the safest, most friendly country in the world. Hands down the most frequent question I get asked is whether we lock our doors in Canada. For some reason, everyone in Spain has seen Bowling for Columbine, and like to politely inform me about the fact that we don't lock our doors. Also, it's cold.
What Canadians think about Spaniards:
Seemingly the only stereotype that has made it to Canada is that Spanish men are romantic.
What Spaniards think about Spaniards:
Spaniards are friendly, open minded and love to party and go to the beach.
What Canadians think about Spain:
Spain? Do they drink tequila there? What about burritos? What is the main language in Spain?
What Spaniards think about Spain:
Spain is a corrupt, boiling hot wasteland with no jobs, too many tourists but at least they have a great Mediterranean lifestyle.
What Spaniards think Canadians think about Spain:
Spaniards, bless them, think that Canadians (and other nations) are well informed about Spain. Spaniards, at least the ones I've met think that Canadians view Spain as a romantic country dedicated to siestas and parties in the streets.
The point? Before I left Canada I thought the rest of the world was more knowledgeable than Canada but the truth is that we are all, to some extent, ignorant about the rest of the world. The two countries I love the most are Spain and Canada...but that doesn't mean I don't find them humerous at times.
