Friday Review-Comme t'y es belle! (2006)

Friday, 09 December 2011

Today's review is Comme T'y es Belle! which is a French chic flick about four Jewish women who have struggles with their love life and work in a salon. Overall, it wasn't a great film, there were a lot of musical montages, falling in love in the rain scenes, you know the drill. Here is the trailer.

However, one thing I did find fascinating about this movie were the cultural differences. This film was totally different from an American chick flick. Let us compare:

French Chick Flick: Woman falls in love with foreign man. She goes to see him at home where she sees him with a woman and baby. She goes home depressed. He calls and says it was his sister she saw him with. She laughs and they get back together. Was it his sister? Who knows and more importantly, who cares?

American Chick Flick: Woman falls in love with foreign man. She goes to see him at home where she sees him with a woman and baby. She goes home depressed. He calls and says it was his sister. It was not his sister, she calls him an asshole among other things and walks off defiantly.

French Chick Flick: Woman has an unhappy marriage and wants to start an affair. She resists at first but eventually does. She leaves her husband and goes off with the other man. The husband and children don't care.

American Chick Flick: Woman has an unhappy marriage and wants to start an affair. She does but then:
Option A.) She feels guilty remembering her life with her husband and confesses her affair. Her husband realises he has been a jerk and apologises profusely with flowers and dinner etc. She doesn't leave her husband. Option B.) She finds out her husband is not only a jerk but he also has had numerous torrid and well documented affairs. She tells him he is an asshole and walks off defiantly to her new boyfriend.

French Chick Flick: Woman is divorced but pining for her ex-husband. She neglects her daughter, goes out partying and hooking up with various men and her ex-husband. She goes to a doctor since her daughter is depressed. He says she is not a bad person, and she is touched by the non-sexual attention he paid to her.

American Chick Flick: Woman is divorced but pining for her ex-husband. She neglects her daughter, goes out partying and hooking up with various men and her ex-husband. She goes to a doctor since her daughter is depressed. He says she is a bad person, she tells her ex-husband he is an asshole and walks off defiantly. She takes a road trip with her daughter and they live happily ever after.

French Chick Flick: Woman is in love with a shallow guy who thinks she is too-fat. She goes on a diet, throws out her chocolate, plays hard to get and he eventually he realises he likes her and they get together.

American Chick Flick: Woman is in love with a shallow guy who thinks she is too fat. She goes on a diet and he throws out her chocolate. He realises he likes her but she tells him he is an asshole and goes after someone who loves her for who she is.

French Chick Flick: Woman's hired help is about to be deported so they get married so she can stay in the country.

American Chick Flick: Woman has torrid love affair with her hired help. They leave their husbands and become lesbian activists. Someone dies.

Overall, this was an enjoyable film and the characters really are endearing and enjoyable to watch.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend, see you Monday! xoxoxox
