Musical Research

Finding new music is hard. Every week I sift through new songs listening for something that catches my attention. Sometimes something does but more often then I listen to a lot of a songs and find nothing that moves me. So here are the songs I am listening to at the moment.
1.) Elephant Gun-Beirut
I wish I could decide if I like this song or not. It reminds me of Rufus Wainwright who I like a lot or at least who's early work I liked a lot. Rufus Wainright and Poses were two great albums. As for this band, I don't know if I like this song yet, but I have listened to it about 10 times now so it must have something.

2.) Loca-Shakira
I love Shakira, I think she is a great artist and I think she knows how to make a catchy, easy to listen to tune. Her style is so unique, even the most adamant indie fan has to admit that she has got skills.

3.) Florence and The Machine-Dog Days are Over
I don't think this is the best song ever, but I think it is another great song for summer. I first heard it on my favourite summer show Covert Affairs. I love Covert Affairs, it is super cheesy, has great costumes and Piper Perabo is so easy to watch and so is that guy who was really cute on Ugly Betty. Anyway, I digress. I like this song, her voice is great and this song is epic. That is why I like it.

4.) Tears Dry On Their Own-Amy Winehouse
Ok, first of all, her death is really tragic, that is certainly true. But I am a bit offended by the tabloids who were always running pictures of her as a drunken mess and giving crack to kitties who are now saying how evil the tabloids are and how they caused her death. But that is another post. I love Tears Dry On Their Own, whenever I listen to it I end up singing and dancing around my house and usually crying. It's that good.

5.) Never Heal Myself- Cults
So, when I first heard the Cults I thought-what is the big deal. My first complaint is their first single was called Oh My God. Is it just me or every few years does the next new indie band come out with a song called Oh My God. I feel like people still think this is a provocative title and people are going to be like "this band must be badass because they have a song called Oh My God." So. My point is if you are an indie band or a quasi indie band or want to be an indie band--don't make a crappy song called Oh My God. Ok, now that I have typed that about 600 times, I really like Never Heal Myself, it's catchy and summery and her voice sounds really fresh to me, the loud chorus is great and I love the "fuck you" at the end. Even though I hear the 'f-word' about a thousand times a day and don't find it particularly offensive, I like to hear it in a song devoid of swearing.

  1. It annoys me how I was pushed to listen to Beirut for covert ageist hate speech ("the guy was 17 when he published his first record"). I don't buy that kind of thing. In fact, I am going to listen to Johnny Cash's album of covers for the rest of the day to make up for this.

  2. While I see your point, I'm not sure it's a valid argument. I agree age is not a good reason to like something, but still. In any case to make up for the great offense of posting this I leave you this article: http://www2.macleans.ca/tag/amy-winehouse/ .
