1.) Canada Vs. America Round #123
Usually when I am in Canada or Europe (but not surrounded by Americans) I get lulled into thinking we are exactly the same culturally, only we are more Northerly. But recently I was reminded of how we are different. I was stunned when, out for dinner with some of the students from my TEFL course, one woman in her late 20's leaned into me and whispered-"my roommate is....a...lesbian!" we proceeded to hear about how her lesbian roommate and her partner were trying to seduce her. I was shocked and astounded. I mean, I guess it is possible that her roommates were really trying to seduce her but more likely this is a subtle case of homohobia gone wild. I mean isn't that what conservative people think all gay people are trying to do--seduce them to the dark side? The thing is, I'm not saying Canadians aren't homophobic/racist/etc so while a Canadian might think that--they probably wouldn't say it out loud, for fear of appearing intolerant. Obviously I am not excusing any kind of intolerance but what I do like is Canadians are aware of enough to realise their own prejudices and not blurt them out to an unsuspecting strangers--normally.
2.) Katy Perry's Smurf Dress
I know this picture has been floating around the internet for a while now of Katy Perry's smurf dress that she wore to the premiere of the Smurf movie, whatever it is called, and it has been getting some criticism. I however wish to defend it. Even though I am not a huge Katy Perry fan and I intend to avoid the smurf movie at all costs, I love this dress! I think Katy looks adorable and it's not like she wore this to the Oscars. If you can't wear a smurf dress to the premiere of a smurf movie in which you play a smurf--where can you?
4.) Two great fashion blogs- Style and Fashion Lover and Miss at la Playa (which I mentioned last time) and both found in the Spanish Marie Claire. As a side note, I prefer Spanish Marie Claire to the American and British Marie Claires by like, a hundred times. Also, I love that these both write in Spanish and English.
5.)While out shopping yesterday I noticed a girl who was wearing a simple t-shirt but stacked bracelets on both arms, I wish I was more gutsy, or had a good excuse to ask her if I could take a picture of her because she looked incredible. The stacked braclets are a favourite trend of mine at the moment and she was rocking it! This picture from W Magazine shows you how it's done!
6.) Just finished reading The Great Gatsby and I loved this book! I know it is an American classic and all but sometimes I read a classic (don't lie, I'm sure this has happened to you) and I get to the end and I secretly hated it the book but being that you just can't say you hated a classic all I can say is "well, it was a classic right?". Anyway, Great Gatsby was not one of those cases, the writing was incredible and the plot was engaging. If you haven't read this book yet, I suggest starting NOW.
