Spanish Word of the Day

Friday, 14 October 2011

Today's word idiom of the day is:

Cambiar de idea-to change one's mind

Why am I posting this, common idiom? For my own sake. I know what it means but every time I read a sentence like this: he cambiado de idea I say to myself  I've changed the idea instead of the correct I've changed my mind. As such I leave you with this excellent tune for practice.

Astrud-Cambio De Idea

Pipa-(sustantivo femenino/feminine noun) pipe, seed (sunflower seed)

This means pipe but it can also be a sunflower seed. Sunflower seeds  are very important to Manitoban culture so I was delighted to learn this word. I also think it's cute, but as my ex told me- "you think everything that has the eee sound in it is cute". He was not wrong.

refunfuñar- (verbo intransitivo) to grumble

To illustrate let's look at a quote from a book I am currently reading

"Louisa, con su chándal rojo chillon suspira y masculla refunfunando un casi incomprensible: "por el amor de Dios!"

Translation: Louisa, in her loud red tracksuit sighs and mutters and almost incomprehensible grumbling "for the love of God".

Crecer: (verbo intransitivo/intransitive verb)-to grow/grow up
(also: to rise/grow/spread (as a rumour) keep up with)

Since it is Friday and music is always a good way to get something sticking in your brain I leave you with this song.
